On Sunday, August 3 at 4 pm, the choir of St. John’s Shaughnessy will present Choral Evensong, honouring the quatercentenary of the death of Orlando Gibbons (1583–1625). They will join forces with BC Viols and MOTET Chamber Choir to present several of his most stunning works with viol consort.
Gibbons was one of several Renaissance composers who popularised the “verse anthem,” where solo voices accompanied by organ or viols would alternate singing with the full choir. The upcoming evensong will feature his Second Service, alongside a Vancouver premiere of a reconstruction of Awake up my glory, plus instrumental voluntaries.
An event not to be missed! Join us for a step back into Jacobean history via the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and music written at the time, performed on period instruments. Stay for the libations and learn what exactly a viol is.
