Our History

 

Worship first took place on the present site in the basement of the Bishop’s House in 1922 when the Bishop was Adam dePencier. Three years later a small church was erected and the parish officially began in 1925. The present church was built in 1949 as a memorial church “… that it be a joyful song unto the Lord; and that it stand as a memorial honouring all Vancouver’s sons and daughters who answer the call to serve their country.”

Using innovative building design ideas the church has stood proudly on Granville Street, one of the main arteries of the city, as a symbol of the centrality of God in the lives of the community. Central to the present ministry is the celebration of the Sacraments with a special emphasis on the relevance and continuing guidance of God through the presence of the Holy Spirit. The life of the parish community as well as the individual lives of the members are grounded and led by the Gospel and Scripture. This forms the basis of how St John’s interprets Jesus’ message of love in modern society.
