Frederick George Carter

Born Enfield, Middlesex 5th Mar 1913, died Vancouver 28th Jul 1998. Carter was educated at the George Spicer School, Enfield, and studied music under Harold Darke. Took the diplomas of FRCO (1948) and CHM (1949). From 1941 to 1948 was organist of St. Paul’s Church, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, and then, from 1948 to 1951, assistant organist of St. Albans Cathedral and Abbey. Appointed at Armagh Cathedral in April 1951, and soon became conductor of local choral societies in Armagh and district. Under Carter the organ was rebuilt to his specification and the choir regularly broadcast Choral Evensong on radio. Left Armagh in August 1966, emigrating to Canada, to become organist of St. John’s Church, Shaughnessy, Vancouver and music master of St. George’s School Vancouver. Formed the Gallery Singers, an internationally renowned chamber choir, and, in 1989 he became organist at Holy Rosary RC Cathedral, Vancouver. His funeral was held at St. Mary’s Church, Kerrisdale, Vancouver, 5th Aug 1998.
