St. John’s Shaughnessy is a small, new, and growing congregation in the Diocese of New Westminster. We are a welcoming and inclusive community, centered in the Eucharist, with a strong choral tradition. We have a beautiful church that can accommodate 450 souls.
Though the Parish has been here for many decades, we are a newly minted congregation of disciples. We love the feeling of community when we greet each other on Sunday mornings. We love the challenge of a good sermon; thinking through Scripture; the sincerity of the Peace; the task of learning new hymns and chants and the familiarity of belting out the old, favorite ones. We acknowledge the slow but steady growth in our congregation but are inspired by the depth of our expanding spiritual attunement.
We have a graceful and willing group of lay volunteers who demonstrate their dedication by preparing the church for the Liturgy, polishing the beautiful and historic silver, arranging flowers; maintaining, weeding, and watering our gardens; and jump in to help when one of the lay readers fails to show up on Sunday! We remind ourselves to be disciples at coffee hour and greet the newcomers in our midst. We are welcoming and humorous – we welcome people dressed in jeans or three-piece suits, young, old, and in between.
